Canned Food Drive

Middleton Middle School is now participating in our annual cash and canned food drive to benefit the Middleton Food Bank. Now, through December 15th, we will be accepting cash and food donations. We also have a class competition and each are working to collect the most cash and food in our 1st period classes. Please help support our local food bank and send in those quarters, dollars, and food items. Please make checks payable to MMS!

Holidays

We hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Thanksgiving break and a rare snow day. We have nine days left until Christmas break and we can tell the kids are already starting to be excited. Sorry about the delay in lesson plans. I actually updated the blog last week from home, but for some reason my updates did not save. Hopefully this will work better! Thanks for your patience! Also, remember you can always check Skyward Family Access to see updated assignments and grades for your child!

Halloween Candy

Is all that Halloween candy becoming a problem in your house? If so, we are in need of candy donations for our classrooms. If you have extra Halloween candy you are looking to get rid of, or find an amazing sale on candy we would be happy to accept any and all donations. Thanks to those of you who have already sent in candy with your student.

Parent Volunteer

Thanks to those of you who have already volunteered your time to help our classes be successful. We are still in need of a copy volunteer for Thursdays, and a reading room volunteer from 12:55-1:30 on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. We have received a Friday Volunteer. If this suites your schedule, your time would be much appreciated!

Blog Information

We are thrilled with the number of logins our team blog has received. We want you to know that we appreciate all the feedback and comments about parent/teacher communication. We strive to keep you as up to date as possible on the goings on at MMS! While we try to stay current and on schedule, we sometimes have to deviate from our anticipated schedules. We are hoping that the blog will provide you with an overview of our weekly lessons and topics being taught. If you are looking for a more specific report on daily activities and lessons in the classroom, please check your child's agenda. Students are required to have their agenda's filled out by 6th period each day. As always, you can also email or call us.

We are finding that many of your emails are not coming through our email server. If you have emailed us, and have not received a response, please call us. We will then be able to more accurately contact our IT department about the problems!

Reading Volunteer

I am looking for a couple of parents who would be willing to supervise a reading room for my intervention study hall students. This intervention class is very large, and the students with no missing work would love to have a place to quietly read. The reading room would need to be supervised from 12:55 - 1:29 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. If you are interested in volunteering one or more days a week, please email me at salsager@msd134.org. Thank you!

School Work

Please ask your child to see their work from school. When we pass back assignments, we are finding many of these assignments in our trash and recycle bins. We have tried to encourage the students to bring their work home for their families to see. We think this is a great way for parents to stay up to date on what is happening at school as well!

Candy Donations

As Halloween quickly approaches, we find we also are in need of a few treats. If you have extra Halloween candy you would like to get out of the house, or find a great sale on those tasty treats, we could really use the extra in our classrooms. We use the candy as a reward for our students and would love to have your extras! Thanks for helping us support and encourage our students!

Weekly Lesson Plans Posted

Weekly lesson plans have been posted. Mr. Lavin's spelling words will be posted tomorrow am. Sorry for the delay!

Copying Helper

We are looking for a parent willing to volunteer once a week, preferably Thursday's, to make our copies for the week. If this is something you would be willing to do, please contact one of us. Your time would be much appreciated!

AGENDA

One of our 6th grade requirements is that students fill out their agenda EVERYDAY. We also prefer they get them signed each night by a parent, but have not held them accountable for this. Have you seen your child's agenda? Starting tomorrow, these will be graded each and every Wednesday in Intervention. Students will receive one point per day and must have every class filled out. This is a requirement and will be a work habits grade. Many of our students are refusing to participate in filling out the agenda and their work habits grade will be docked accordingly!

Interventions

Today we started our new intervention classes. Our intervention focus this year is Language and Math. As a team, we decided our initial classes would focus on Language Conventions and Math Measurement. Looking at assessment data (ISATS, Classroom work, Teacher recommendation, etc.) we were able to determine which of our students would benefit the most from extra assistance/instruction in these two areas. We also identified students who may need extra time and help getting assignments done and enrolled those students in a study hall. We are very excited about these new classes and feel your child will benefit greatly throughout the year. Please ask your child about his/her new classes!

Progress Reports

Progress reports will be available at 3:45 tonight using your Skyward user name and password. This progress report will be a measurement of your child's progress the first six weeks of school. They will have a Content Knowledge, Work Habits and Behavior Grade posted, as well as comments. Remember, this is a progress report and not a final grade report. You child still has six weeks to make necessary adjustments and change things that need to be changed. If you have any questions, please contact us!

Parent Teacher Conferences

Parent Teacher conferences are on Wednesday, October 7th, and are by invitation only. At this time we are meeting with as many parents as we can who have students in jeopardy of losing credits. While we wish we had the time to meet with all of you, we only have a three hour allotment of time this week. If you feel you need to meet with the team to discuss your child's progress, please call and set-up an appointment with us. We typically schedule these on M, T, Th, or F between 1:45 and 3:00. You can also email or call us and we will discuss any concerns you might have.

Fundraiser

Our fundraiser is drawing to a close. We appreciate all that supported this effort. Tomorrow, during 1st period, those that participated will be able to attend a BMX Bike Show. It is not too late to participate! If your child would like to see the show and has not sold any magazines, they can bring a $10.00 donation to the office before 8:10 tomorrow morning and they will receive a ticket to attend.

Test Retakes

The Vocabulary Packet #2 test retake will be next Tuesday, October 12th, during lunch. Mrs. Alsager offered retakes today, but no one showed to retake. The students must bring back the test retake slip they were given with a parent signature This signature will be an indication that you have studied the vocabulary words with your child. No test retakes will occur without a parent signature!

The Layers of the Earth test retake will be on Monday, October 11th, at lunch. The requirements for this test are listed in Mrs. Alsager's lesson plans for the week.

Study Skills and Expectations

We have seen that many of our students do not seem to understand the importance and necessity of studying at home for tests and quizzes. As we are grading our assessments we are noticing more and more that the students are receiving either A's or F's. There is a direct correlation between those who have studied and those who have not! We encourage you to ask your child about their school work, check their agendas for assignments, and utilize the blog to see when tests are upcoming. Please help them study by reviewing information and study guides. If your child's content knowledge grades are low, there is a good indication that they have scored low on assessments!

Weekly Lesson Plans Updated

Sorry these were late, we were working on getting progress reports done!

Skyward

Last week, if you have an email on file in the office, you should have received an email with a user name and password to access Skyward. If you did not receive this information or would like to provide us with an email, please contact the office at 208-585-3251. This is a really easy way to track your student's progress.

Progress Reports and Conferences

Can you believe we have already been in school a half a trimester? Wow! Mid trimester progress reports will be printed next week. We will also be hosting parent teacher conferences by appointment only on Wed., October 6th. We post more information as it becomes available. But, as always, feel free to contact us anytime to discuss your child's progress or any concerns or questions you may have!

School Supplies

We are still collecting boxes of Kleenex and Clorox Wipes. We appreciate all the donations that have already been given to us. We love to have clean, healthy classrooms.

Students need to have a spiral notebook for Science. We had three notebooks on the supply list and quickly realized that we really needed the students to have four. Right now, many of the students are using one notebook for math and science. This is a great solution to our dilemma, but we know that this notebook will probably fill up quickly and may need to be replenished.

Flair Pens - as the students already realize, we do a lot of projects in the 6th grade that require nice, neat, handwriting in pen. The students really like the cleanliness and ease a flair pen provides them. If you are able to purchase a flair pen for your child it would be much appreciated. We do have a small supply to loan to students, but many would like to have their own:)

Snacks in the Classroom

Our 6th grade mornings are very long this year. For this reason, we have opted to allow students to bring HEALTHY snacks with them to the classroom. Unfortunately, in the past week we have had to become the snack police. Students are choosing to bring chips, candy and other unhealthy options to our classrooms. We have given the students a warning and hope this will be the end of snack policing. Please help your child choose snacks that are healthy and nutritious.

Box Tops

Our first month of Box Top collecting has gone great. Thank you for collecting and sending in those Box Tops with your child. We will continue to collect these throughout the school year.

Fundraiser

Thank you for all the amazing support you have shown for our MMS fundraiser. Our first turn in day was last Friday and so far we have seen great success. The final turn in day will be this coming Friday, October 1st. If you are not interesting in participating in the fundraiser, but still want to provide support to our athletic and exploratory programs, you can make a donation. A $10.00 donation counts as one magazine sale and will allow your child to also be eligible for prizes associated with the fundraiser. This is the only fundraiser our Middle School participates in, so we are hoping for great success to keep our amazing programs and athletics in tact! Thanks again for all you have done so far. Keep Selling!

Vocabulary Packet Week 2

Weekly Lesson Plans Posted

Weekly Lesson Plans Posted for September 20-25

Vocabulary Tests and Packets

Last week we finished Vocabulary Packet #1 and on Thursday we took a quiz over the words and definitions from that packet. The vocab packet is a work habits grade. Part of the packet is done together as a class, while other sections are assigned for student class work or homework. We grade all sections together as a class and students are allowed to change their answers as we grade. This process helps them learn and recognize these words. Unfortunately, some of the students came to class with their class/homework unfinished. In this instance, they are sent to the hallway to finish their assignments. While in the hallway, they are missing the discussion and grading of the actual assignment.

On Thursday, when tests were taken, there was a definite correlation between test grades and incomplete work. When students come to class unprepared and with unfinished assignments they miss out on very important information. Every two weeks a new Vocabulary Packet will come home to study. Please ask your child about these packets and help them learn these words:)

Also, please ask your child how he/she did on the first test. If they received below a "c" on this quiz they will have the option to retake the quiz on Thursday, the 23rd. We sent home retake papers today and a parent signature will be required for these retakes.

Skyward and Student Grades

Later this week our student data system, Skyward, will be opened for parents. Parents will be assigned a user name and password and will have access to their child's grades. We hope this access, as well as the information from our blog, will help you stay up to date with your child's progress. If there are any questions or concerns through this process, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Fundraiser

Our school Fundraiser is currently under way. The students should have brought home their fundraiser stuff this past week. They are selling magazines to raise money for all the amazing programs and athletic teams we have at our school. Students will be rewarded for turning in sold orders on Friday. Please support your child and help them support our school by participating in this fundraiser.

Reading Goals and Weekly Logs

Mrs. Alsager's and Mrs. Warwick's classes have received their reading levels and reading goals for the 1st trimester. These goals are written in the front of their agendas. The students know how to access REN PLACE from home to check AR books and book levels. They can not take tests from home, as they are password protected. We are very excited that many of the students chose to challenge themselves and "up" their reading goals for the trimester. YEAH!

Also, all the reading logs have gone home with the students. They are required to read 30 minutes a night for at least 5 nights a week, or 150 minutes per week. These are due on the 1st of each month and require a parent signature. This will be graded as a work habits grade and the students will be awarded with Pizza Hut coupons for their efforts. Please hang these on the fridge and remind your child to read each night!

Weekly Lesson Plans Posted

Weekly lesson plans have been posted under each teacher's name. Be sure to check to see what your child is doing in each subject each day. We are already seeing some students falling behind in their work. Reminders will be very helpful.

Vahalla, our after school program, started today. Many of our Bronco Students were bringing home registration forms today. This is a great FREE program for our MMS Students. There are many activities and classes that take place each day from 3:00 - 5:30. We can't wait to see the excitement for this program continue to grow!

Box Tops are still being collected by 1st period teachers. For every 15 box tops turned in, your child will earn a pass to be excused from the IHLI lap. Ask them about this and start collecting those box tops!

Next week we will kick off our annual school magazine sale fundraiser. Look for more information next Tuesday. The 6th graders are always very excited and help push our school toward our yearly fundraising goals!

As always, if you need anything or have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to contact us.

Box Tops

Just a quick reminder that we are ready to collect the box tops you have been saving for us over the summer. Please deliver these to your first period teachers. Also, Albertsons is running a special, if you buy 10 products you receive 50 box tops for the school. We are hoping the box tops will help us supplement some of the funds we lost for teacher supplies. Your help is much appreciated!

For a complete list of products carrying box tops, click on the heading , BOX TOPS, above! Happy Collecting!

Day Two Complete

Wow, what an amazing first couple of days of school. We are very excited to get to know your children. These first few days have been hectic, but fun. As a school and a team we are working out some of the kinks that the first week of school always brings. We will continue to work through those kinks and hopefully settle into a nice routine and schedule next week. If your child has not yet delivered their Kleenex and/or Chlorox wipes to their first period teachers, please remind them to do so. With tighter budgets this year we will definitely need these items to make it through the school year. We appreciate your donations to classroom cleanliness!

Also, it is important for your child to have their school supplies with them each day, this includes their agenda! If you are struggling to provide these supplies, please let us know so we can help your child get what they need:)

As always, if you need anything don't hesitate to call or email us! Have a super weekend.
