Mrs. Warwick's Weekly Agenda

The potato was domesticated by the Incas, and they developed over 140 different varieties. 6th Grade will be celebrating the end of our Inca Unit with a delicious potato bar on Wednesday, February 2. Please see the link explaining this and what you can do to assist us.  Thanks.

Inca Unit test will be given on Wednesday, January 26. A study guide is being completed in school and will come home on Tuesday to be studied and signed by a parent. If you want to get a head start or your child forgets to bring it home, you can find the link here on our blog.

--Monday and Tuesday we are finishing our Inca video Secrets of Lost Empires. Ask your child about Inca stonework and bridge building!
--Wednesday and Thursday we will begin learning about Inca food and agriculture--especially the importance of the potato and the llama in Inca society. We will complete a paper on Inca agriculture on Thursday. If it is not finished in class it will become homework due on Friday morning.
We will also begin a new round of Daily Oral Geography. All students need a DOG spiral! Some students have been writing it down on separate pieces of notebook, and they have been lost by the time our quiz rolls around. (They can use their spirals on the quiz.)
--Friday we will be watching a very interesting video on llamas. There is a very, very short (maybe 5 seconds) scene of two llamas mating in the video and a small and endearing scene of a baby llama being born. I warn of them in advance and have run into no problems/embarrassments in all the years I have shown it. If you have objections to your child watching this video, please let me know.
--We do not send the Inca books home for make-up work because we only have a class set, they are getting worn out, and are out of print. Please check the attached links for pages from the books that we have read so far.

This week we will be concentrating on Accelerated Reading. The students will be given time to silently read and take any AR tests as needed. In order to qualify for our Friday Movie Day, the students must have taken an AR test this trimester and have no missing work.

Working on Vocabulary Packet #6 and finishing Fact and Opinion lessons. Vocabulary Quiz on Friday, please study with your child at home!

Vocabulary Packet #6

Week of November 15th

Reading:

Wednesday is the last day to take AR tests for 1st trimester. Many students still have 0% of their AR goal for the trimester. Please encourage your child to read at least 30 minutes each night.
We are continuing our lessons on Cause and Effect this week. Also, Vocabulary Packet #5 should be completed by tomorrow. We will be having a vocabulary test on Friday. The link to these words is on the home page.
Wednesday, we will also be having a unit test over idoms, inference and cause and effect. Since this is a skills test, there is really no need to study.

Social Studies

Monday and Tuesday we will be watching an Inca video, "Secrets of the Ancestors". Wednesday - Friday, we will be illustrating and presenting Inca laws.

Social Studies:
·          Monday and Tuesday we will be discussing Inca leadership and the Sapa Inca.
·          Tuesday will be the final test over the countries and capitals of South America. Students will be provided with a word bank so that spelling won’t be an issue.
·          Wednesday will be a short group assessment in which students collaborate to discuss/write/draw whatever they have learned about the Inca so far.
·          Thursday we will read about Inca government and laws. Each student will be given a law to illustrate. We will work on these in class Thursday, Friday, and Monday. Any work not completed will be sent home as homework to be returned on Tuesday to present in front of the class.
·          Daily Oral Geography (DOG) will resume on Thursday. Please remind your child to bring their SS spirals to class.
·          Our Inca books are out-of-print so we do not send them home with students. I will post a link to the chapters we are currently working with each week in case your child needs to access them.
Reading:
·          November 17 is the last day to take AR tests before report cards are completed. AR goals will be included as a 100 point assignment in the Work Habits grade. Your child will receive a grade that will equal the percentage of the AR goal that they have accomplished, ie., 85% of AR goal will be 85 points in the gradebook. You can access your child’s reading record through the Middle School website. Follow the links through the Media link on the left-hand side. (You child should know how to do this.)
·          This week continues our work on Cause and Effect reading skills.

--Test over the countries and capitals of South America will be next Tuesday, Nov.9. It will be worth 100 points in the Content Knowledge grade. We have been working on these in class for over 4 weeks—and those students who have studied them at home a few at a time know them very well. The rest had better get studying!!!
--We continue our study of the Incas. Ask your child what an ayllu is. This week we are creating symbols or totems to represent ayllus. Then we will move into Inca government and laws—and they had some mighty strange ones!
