Science
We are using this week to introduce our Arctic/Antarctic Unit. The students will be completing a pre-assessment of their Polar knowledge with a Venn Diagram. At the end of the unit they will complete this activity again and compare their beginning knowledge to their new found knowledge. This is a great way for all of us to see how much they learn during our units!

Reading 1/10/11
The students have been learning about raising Inca Children and Inca Craftsman. They are in the process of completing a project describing and explaining these. This is due on Tuesday. We are also AR reading, taking tests, and working on Vocabulary Packet #7. We will have a quiz over this vocabulary packet next week. Study Study Study!
Science 1/10/11
We are currently reviewing for our Earth's Formation Final Exam. The students will complete the guides Monday and Tuesday by themselves and in small groups. On Wed. we will begin correcting the guide together as a class, and I will be providing all the correct answers. I will post the completed Study Guide on Thursday, so that it is accessible at home as well. The final test, which will be the only content knowledge grade to this point, will be on Tuesday, January 19th. Please take the time to review this study guide with your child.
Also, since we are at the end of the unit, all assignments related to Earth, Plate Movement, Earthquakes and Volcanoes are due no later than this Thursday. All missing work will be changed to a 0% and will be unable to be made up for credit.
Reading: 12/13/10
This week we will be concentrating on Accelerated Reading. The students will be given time to silently read and take any AR tests as needed. In order to qualify for our Friday Movie Day, the students must have taken an AR test this trimester and have no missing work.
Science: 12/13/10
We have been studying volcanoes recently and will continue to do so this week with the Kid's Discover Volcano Magazines. The students will be reading the magazines and completing a reading guide. This will all be done in class and must be completed before Friday in order to attend Movie Day!
Reading:
We have been working on differentiating between fact and opinion. We will continue to work on these concepts this week. We are also finishing up vocabulary packet #6 and will be ready to test on this packet on Friday. Please plan on studying the words and definitions with your child this week!

Science:
We are currently studying volcanoes and are learning about the 3 types of volcanoes as well as the specific parts of a volcano. We will be drawing and labeling diagrams of the types of volcanoes this week and will have a quiz next week, The studens will need to differentiate between the 3 types of volcanoes and also be able to identify the specific parts of a volcano. Have the students tell you about what they are learning!
Reading:
Wednesday is the last day to take AR tests for 1st trimester. Many students still have 0% of their AR goal for the trimester. Please encourage your child to read at least 30 minutes each night.
We are continuing our lessons on Cause and Effect this week. Also, Vocabulary Packet #5 should be completed by tomorrow. We will be having a vocabulary test on Friday. The link to these words is on the home page.
Wednesday, we will also be having a unit test over idoms, inference and cause and effect. Since this is a skills test, there is really no need to study.
Science:
Tomorrow we will have a quiz over Earthquake Terms and Plate Movement. These should all be in the student's spiral, but can also be accessed in last week's lesson plans. Please remind students to study these tonight, as this will be the last Content Knowledge grade of the trimester and students will not be able to retake this quiz.
Also this week, students will be creating their Earthquake dictionaries. The requirements are as follows:
*Cover page - title, a by line, and a colored earthquake related to earthquakes.
* Dictionary Pages - word and definition and a colored picture representing the word.
* All writing needs to be in Ink or Fine-tip Flair and the pictures and background should be colored.
Reading
· November 17 is the last day to take AR tests before report cards are completed. AR goals will be included as a 100 point assignment in the Work Habits grade. Your child will receive a grade that will equal the percentage of the AR goal that they have accomplished, ie., 85% of AR goal will be 85 points in the gradebook. You can access your child’s reading record through the Middle School website. Follow the links through the Media link on the left-hand side. (You child should know how to do this.)
· This week continues our work on Cause and Effect reading skills.
Science
- Earthquake terminology notes. The students will be using the attached google presentation to take notes on earthquake terminology. We will then convert the notes into mini earthquake dictionaries. We will work on these two assignments in class Wedensday, November 10 - Wednesday, November 17th. The final copy dictionaries will be due Friday, November 19th.
- There will be a quiz over the Earthquake terminology on Tuesday, November 16th. This quiz will also include the four types of plate boundaries.

--Earthquake Magazine Reading Guides were due on Monday, many students are not finished and will need to finish in study hall intervention, if they have that class, or at lunch. Please encourage your student to come in and finish those assignments. They will be late after Thursday!

Reading Week of October 25
- Make-up vocabulary quizzes to be given at lunch on Monday. All those who received a D or F on the quiz last week had an opportunity to retake the test. Only two students brought back parent signatures and showed up for the retake.
- End of 1st trimester is coming in November. AR goals are worth 100 points in Reading Work Habits. Too many of our students either have not earned enough points or have not read any books this trimester.
- We are working on Vocabulary Packet #4 in class. Next quiz will not be until the end of the week following Halloween. Please study these new words and definitions with your child.
- We have been using a Kid's Discover Inca magazine to read for main idea and important details as well as improving skills in analyzing text structure.
